An Open Letter to the Albanian National Tourism Agency
As the founder of AlbaniaVisit.com, the largest independent travel website dedicated to promoting Albania, I am compelled to address an urgent issue affecting the very heart of Albania’s tourism growth. The current inefficiencies in Albania’s electronic visa (e-visa) processing system are not just minor inconveniences—they are substantial barriers deterring countless potential visitors from experiencing the beauty and hospitality the country offers.
Through our partnership with various global platforms assisting travelers in securing visas for Albania, we have witnessed an alarming trend. Many applicants are unable to process their e-visas effectively, leading to cancellations, financial refunds, and growing frustration among tourists. This is not an isolated issue; it reflects systemic flaws that require immediate attention.
Broken Communication Channels
The situation is exacerbated by the lack of functional communication channels within the government’s tourism infrastructure. The official Albanian tourism website, egov-albania-al.online, which is supposed to serve as a gateway for international travelers, still lists outdated contact information. Even worse, its contact forms do not work. Attempts to reach out via their contact page lead to dead ends, leaving both tourists and tourism partners without recourse.
After numerous attempts to contact the Albanian National Tourism Agency, I finally received a response from Kornelia Ferizaj, who is still listed as its director on the official government website. However, reliable sources indicate that she no longer holds this position. While I appreciate her taking the time to respond—something many officials have failed to do—her suggested solution simply does not work for those outside Albania.
She directed me to turizmi.gov.al to file an official complaint. However, the e-Albania platform blocks international stakeholders from submitting formal complaints unless they have an Albanian ID (NID) or business tax number (NIPT). This exclusionary policy shuts out foreign tourism partners and individuals from addressing critical visa issues.
Meanwhile, emails remain unanswered, phone lines ring without being picked up, and direct messages are read but ignored. Families are stranded in visa limbo, with cases where three members receive visas while one does not, and there is no official recourse to address the situation in a timely manner. These are not hypothetical scenarios—these are real issues affecting real travelers, and we are actively assisting many such families and individuals caught in this bureaucratic maze.
Government Failure & Lack of Oversight
The responsibility for these failures does not end at the tourism agency. Mirela Kumbaro Furxhi, Minister of Tourism and Environment, bears ultimate responsibility for ensuring that Albania’s tourism infrastructure functions properly. Her Ministry has failed to oversee and maintain basic operational standards, from visa processing to communication accessibility.
How is it possible that the official Albanian tourism agency:
- Lists outdated leadership contacts?
- Fails to update public-facing communication channels?
- Ignores direct messages and inquiries from tourism stakeholders?
- Blocks foreign businesses from formally filing complaints?
Albania is pushing aggressively to position itself as a top-tier travel destination. But what kind of signal does this send to the world when its own Ministry of Tourism refuses to acknowledge or fix these glaring problems? The lack of basic administrative oversight is not just embarrassing—it is actively harming Albania’s reputation and economic growth.
The Impact on Albania’s Tourism Image
Tourism is one of Albania’s fastest-growing sectors, yet the inefficiency of the e-visa system and government communication undermine this progress. Travelers expect seamless digital experiences, especially when dealing with official government portals. Every failed visa application, every ignored message, and every outdated webpage chips away at Albania’s credibility as a modern, tourist-friendly destination.
Accountability and Transparency Are Non-Negotiable
We cannot allow incompetence or neglect within key government agencies to jeopardize Albania’s tourism future. This isn’t just about an e-visa system—it’s about systemic failures, lack of accountability, and broken channels of communication.
A Call to Action for the Albanian Ministry of Tourism and the National Tourism Agency
Minister Mirela Kumbaro Furxhi and the responsible agencies must take immediate action to:
- Fix the Contact Infrastructure – Ensure that contact forms and official communication channels are functional and regularly updated.
- Improve E-Visa Processing – Conduct a full audit of the e-visa system to identify technical and administrative failures.
- Establish Direct Communication Lines – Create a dedicated support system for tourism partners to resolve issues efficiently.
- Publicly Acknowledge the Problem – Admit that these failures exist and commit to fixing them transparently.
Albania’s potential as a world-class tourism destination is undeniable. But without effective administration and accountability, we will continue losing credibility, visitors, and economic opportunities.
This is not just about fixing a website or a visa system—it’s about ensuring Albania remains competitive and welcoming on the global stage.
I stand ready to assist the families and individuals I have already mentioned, who are currently affected by these visa issues. If someone from the relevant government agencies can take action to resolve these specific cases, I can be reached here.
